Take a Manufacturing Field Trip

Program Description:
Visiting a manufacturing plant or experiencing the world of engineering or design helps to shift student mindsets around advanced manufacturing. When students think of manufacturing, they typically think of the "old-school" assembly line. However, manufacturing today is clean and high-tech and a very in-demand domain. It's important that we show students how applicable their STEM skills are to the different roles in an organization so they can visualize themselves in this field.

Rube-Goldberg Design

Program Description:
Who is Rube Goldberg? He is best known for his "Inventions" cartoons,
which use a string of outlandish tools, people, plants, and steps to accomplish everyday simple tasks in the most complicated way. It's a chain reaction that occurs to make something happen (think of the game mousetrap). Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist Rube Goldberg's drawings point out that people are often overwhelmed by over complicating their lives.

Advanced Manufacturing Video Reflection

Activity Description:
Students will watch a video exploring the world of advanced manufacturing and write a reflection.

Hidden Figures Screening

Program Description:
The story of a team of African-American women mathematicians who served a vital role in NASA during the early years of the US space program.

National Science League Test

Owning/Managing Organization:
National Science League

Program Description:
Students test their knowledge in various areas of Science.

Design an Advanced Manufacturing PBL

Program Description:
Project Based Learning is a teaching method in which students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time to investigate and respond to an authentic, engaging and complex question, problem, or challenge.

To be considered for points, PBLS must incorporate all aspects of the engineering design process, including building a prototype and testing/redesign.

Visit a University Engineering or Manufacturing Department

Program Description:
Many colleges and universities provide opportunities for students to visit specific departments. Visiting a University Engineering Department is a great opportunity for students to learn how the skills they are developing in middle or high school can transfer to a college course. Additionally, students will learn about additional career paths in the advanced manufacturing or engineering world. Finally, students are exposed to tools and technology relevant to their eventual field of study.

Day of Discovery

Program Description:
The Day of Discovery Program is a middle school science enrichment partnership between Vanderbilt Center for Science Outreach and Metro Nashville Public Schools. This program provides students with opportunities to cultivate curiosity, creativity, and critical reading and communication skills through a hands-on problem-based approach to scientific exploration.

TTU Baja SAE Visit

Program Description:
In this activity students will visit Tennessee Tech's Mechanical Engineering Department's BAJA Team to learn the history of BAJA, learn how the team is created and who the team members are and what their role is on the BAJA team, speak to BAJA members about their progress and plans for the future, and ultimately view the TTU BAJA Car.
