2017-2018 MakerMinded Launch Event

For the launch of this year’s competition, MakerMinded is partnering with local companies to hold events throughout the first few months of school. These events are designed to spread the word about the new program and to get schools and industry partners connected and off to a good start for the current school year.

Attend a STEM Camp in KY

STEM camps provide students the opportunity to continue their learning outside of the classroom. It is important for students to stay engaged in learning throughout the year. There are many camps offered for middle and high school students across the state of Kentucky throughout the summer and during breaks throughout the school year.

Attend a Local STEM Event

STEM events allow students to engage in hands-on activities, interact with STEM professionals, and connect what they are learning to real-world experiences.

STEM Day with the Blue Jackets

Columbus Blue Jackets STEM day will consists of three segments; a movie on our founder, John McConnell and the team, an open skate on the main ice and a Q&A speaker panel with professionals in the STEM industry.
The first ten schools to sign-up will get to have two of their students each participate in our High-Five Tunnel where they get to high-five the players as they go out onto the ice! Some of these spots have been filled.

Wonder League Robotics Team

Coding is the new team sport for future tech leaders and innovators. This year, teams will participate in three rounds of missions over a five- month period to become eligible for a Wonder Workshop sponsored Invitational Round in Spring 2018. Teams of kids, ages 6-8 and 9-12 will design solutions for real- world science and technology challenges by programmings Dash & Dot. They will develop problem- solving and creativity skills while building meaningful relationships with their peers and having fun! Plus they will display their scientific thinking through authentic journaling.

MakerX The Columbus Maker Expo

MakerX is an independent maker festival that consists of a celebration, learning, and networking event for everyone in interested in the exciting new technologies of digital design and fabrication. We are looking for schools that want to exhibit their robotics, drone, 3D printing, digital music, art, and digital content creation and makerspace/fablab programs to the public. Exhibit proposals are currently being accepted. Free tickets for K12 students to attend will be available after January 1, 2018.

Teen Science Café

Teen Science Café out-of-school programs are a free, fun way for teens to explore the big advances in science and technology affecting their lives. Teens and STEM experts engage in lively conversations and activities to explore a topic deeply.

KY Governor's School for Entrepreneurs

Have you ever dreamed of starting a company and wondered what it takes and where to start? GSE will help you answer this question. In the 3 weeks at GSE you'll be exposed to experienced entrepreneurs, startup tools, funding, pitch competitions, emerging technologies, and scholarships. It is 100% free to apply and attend; all Kentucky 9th, 10th, and 11th grades are eligible to apply.

NKY 3D Printing Club

Students with all levels of experience can join this club and learn how to 3D print over the course of 10 weeks. New content is introduced from year-to-year for the club, so students can return and continue to learn new things. Pamela Jayne, youth librarian for BCPL will be teaching this club, and the club will be facilitated by Emily Greene of NKY Makerspace.

Create or Join a STEM Club

A STEM Club is a gathering of students that meets regularly in an informal environment to work on inquiry-based Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) related activities. A STEM Club might take the form of an out of school club or might expand regular school activities through activities embedded as within the regular school day.
